An end to the near 12 week long strike by dominion workers may be on the horizon.
On Saturday, Unifor announced it would be bringing an offer from Loblaw to its members tomorrow, beginning the process of a week-long vote on the document.
This comes at the height of what has been a tumultuous couple of weeks for the striking workers.
The two sides briefly came back to the bargaining table just over a week ago, but talks quickly broke down once again. This prompted government to appoint mediator Wayne Fowler.
As well, the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has now been called to the Weston’s Bakery secondary picket line twice due to the strikers refusing to let delivery trucks cross.
As a result of the first actions by the RNC, Unifor filed legal action against the police force for allegedly violating the strikers’ charter rights.
Lead negotiator for Unifor, Chris MacDonald says it has been a long 12 weeks for the workers and now only time will tell what they make of the proposed deal delivered by the mediator.
Fowler has told the union that it’s Loblaw’s “final offer” and the best the company can do. MacDonald says they will share with members what the company and mediator have said, and they will see what the membership thinks of that.
