Residents of Petty Habour are pushing back against a steel fence that is preventing locals from fishing on the stages.
The fence, erected by the non-profit organization Fishing for Success, was put there to keep residents from fishing near the business. Fishing for Success has defended its decision, saying that it is designed to keep their guests safe, but some locals are not buying it.
A petition, started by resident Alicia Burry, now has nearly 450 signatures. She says the issue isn’t so much about the fence, but about the shoreline.
She says they are claiming the historical shoreline where families have fished for decades.
Brandon Coady, who has grown up fishing on the stage, is frustrated with the restricted access.
He says with limited access, the historic aspect of the area is fading. He says couples, kids, and tourists who normally visit the stages can no longer do so.
