Earlier Story
The Royal St. John’s Regatta is through most of the regular programming but the main draw is still to come.
In the first senior male race of the day, NTV led all the way in a time of 9:40.42 with Belfor second in 9:48.43 followed by Andrew McDonald General Contracting (10:04.33), Newfoundland Power (10:08.62) and Woodmar Contracting (10:31.34).
Male Race #2 saw O’Brien Engineering claim first in an interesting time of 10:31.28. That would have put them in the championship race and squeeze out Woodmar Contracting but a masters’ team, JMS Electrical, rowed a 10:24.57 the next race to claim the fifth spot. That crew is laden with hall of fame rowers including coxswain Jim Carroll.
Hyflodraulic won the first senior female race of the day in 5:08.31 followed by Dawe and Burke at 5:23.46 and Roebothan McKay Marshall 5:24.02. The Cahill Group (5:26.87) and Kennedy’s Cleaning Services (5:30.75) round out the slate. That was a strong row by the winners but they will have to erase over 10 seconds if they are to write their way into the record book.
India Gate won the second senior female race in 5:40.89 so all five crews in the first race will be in the championship barring the unforeseen. First General 5:45.03, Steers Insurance 5:47.19, P.F. Collins 6:04.34 and Allied Construction 6:17.34 round out the race.
Universal Corporate Wear easily won the female midget race and just missed a record time by 3 seconds. They have been rowing together since age 10. pic.twitter.com/86peJxWEbi
