Parishioners had little clue this weekend that Easter Sunday services at the United Church in Pacquet on the Baie Verte Peninsula would be the last in that building.
Fishermen who were heading out on the water this morning at 4:45 were the first to notice smoke coming from the structure which dates to the 1950s.
They alerted the local fire department, who were assisted by firefighters from nearby Woodstock and Baie Verte.
Pacquet town clerk Janet Sacrey says despite their best efforts, the church is a loss. She says it’s a very sad day in the community and she’s not sure what will happen next.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
