A police officer was struck by a vehicle when a driver attempted to flee a traffic stop in Conception Bay South Friday night.

The officer was not seriously injured and the driver was later arrested.

The man has been charged with assault with a weapon, dangerous driving, flight from police as well as violations of the Highway Traffic Act.

He is being held for court.

The roadside stop was part of Operation Impact, an initiative to increase enforcement and vehicle checkpoints across the province over the long holiday weekend.
