Students at Marine Institute can now receive special training that would once require you to leave the province.
A new Heritage Bridge Simulator was donated to the MUN campus by Teekay Offshore.
The simulator recreates the operating environment of a shuttle tanker in the Grand Banks. It will move and respond like the real ship with the same controls and displays.
Director of the Centre for Marine Simulation, Chris Hearn says students won’t be the only ones to benefit. People working in the offshore industry can also avail of the training.
Hearn says having this technology in Newfoundland and Labrador is important. He says it will make our industry competitive because they can finally provide training that previously required you to leave the province.
New courses using the simulator’s technology will begin in the new year.
