A man who was officially recognized as a provincial tradition bearer has passed away.
Charlie Pearcey owned Pearcey’s Twine Store and Stage in the Outer Battery, a traditional twine loft that welcomed visitors from around the world.
The twine store, owned by the Pearcey family, had been in the Outer Battery since 1891 and Charlie was an ardent ambassador for the province’s fishing history and traditions.
Local actor and comedian Mark Critch considered Pearcey a friend as many throughout the province did. He says Pearcey’s passion and knowledge were unmatched.
The store was a museum, and Charlie was only too happy to share stories of the fishery and the equipment used.
Charlie’s twine store was right on the road on the way to the North Head Trail on Signal Hill. He was known for standing outside the open doors, to invite people in for a cup of tea and a yarn.
St. John’s lost one its greatest ambassadors. Charlie Pearcey welcomed strangers from all over the world into his Twine Loft. It was a museum and he was the best guide you could every have. The Battery & the Signal Hill trail will never be the same. All my love to the family. pic.twitter.com/cTlNf80pDp
