The Child and Youth Advocate is again putting the squeeze on government to do an inquiry into Innu children in the child protection system.
The recent death of an Innu youth by suicide while in care further underlines the sense of urgency to get the process moving according to advocate Jackie Lake Kavanagh.
She went to Nain last fall to release her report on the provincial government’s responses to Inuit children, which contained 33 recommendations. She says the report, titled “A Long Wait for Change,” reflects the unacceptable amount of time for changes to be made.
Kavanagh adds that it has never been more important than now to move to collective action for Indigenous children and youth.
