The Atlantic Provinces will join their borders for a travel bubble in a few days’ time, but many wish to keep current travel restrictions in place for Newfoundland and Labrador.
On Friday, July 3, residents of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, PEI, and New Brunswick will be permitted to travel between each province without being required to self-isolate for 14 days.
Anyone traveling to the Atlantic provinces from elsewhere in the country will still be required to follow restrictions as set by each province.
Steve Richardson created an online petition to give a voice to those against the Atlantic Bubble.
The petition has since gained in excess of 10,000 names. He’s asking government to listen to the concerns of its people and reconsider its decision.
Meanwhile, a local musician is also mystified by the move.
Shanneyganock’s Chris Andrews took to Facebook on the weekend to express his frustration at moving to the Atlantic Bubble on Friday.
He says he has heard from many who don’t qualify for CERB, and cannot make ends meet because of COVID-19.
Andrews says people in the music industry are also struggling, and changes are needed.
He says government is putting up money for MusicNL, but that money only goes towards artists who are members, and is not supporting the music industry as a whole.
