This will be marked as one of the more unusual Regatta Day holidays in St. John’s history.
The annual regatta, the oldest continuous sporting event in North America, is normally held on the first Wednesday in August.
COVID-19 forced the cancellation of this year’s races, and without a Regatta, the city decided to shift the holiday to Monday – in line with the civic holiday marked across the country.

A crowd of people gathers at the boathouse during the 2019 Royal St. John’s Regatta.
Meanwhile, most municipal offices and facilities are closed today.
Garbage and recycling collection is going ahead in the capital city today, while the Robin Hood Bay Waste Management Facility is also open to commercial and residential users.
Outdoor swimming pools in St. John’s are open while the Splash Pads at Bowring and Bannerman parks and the Kenmount Terrace Community Centre will be open from 9 a.m. to sunset.
Parking regulations will not be enforced as today is a Shop Closing day.
