The Admiralty House Museum and Archives is looking for information to help locate the burial sites of people who were on board the SS Florizel.
The ill-fated vessel was on its regular route from St. John’s to Halifax and then New York. Miscommunication and tempestuous conditions caused the steamship to crash and sink on the rocks of Cappahayden on February 23, 1918.
Ninety-three people died, while 44 others had to fight through a dramatic 27-hour rescue effort.
The Admiralty House Museum is looking to research and preserve knowledge of those on board the Florizel, and its final voyage.
Once collected, the information will be uploaded onto ‘Find a Grave,’ which is a crowd-sourced database for burial marker records and photos for the public to view.
A list of the passengers and crew is available in an online spreadsheet; anyone interested in the project can create a ‘Find a Grave’ page for relatives or people in their community.
Anyone with information or questions is encouraged to contact Admiralty House by email or call 748-1124.
