The Innu Nation has filed a complaint with the Canadian Human Rights Commission against the Government of Canada over the child welfare system.
The Innu Nation accuses Ottawa of discriminating against Innu children and families through its funding of the system.
They say the federal government provides unlimited funding to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to take Innu children away from their families while funding provided to their people for prevention services is not sufficient.
Grand Chief Gregory Rich points to Wally Rich, a youth who died while in a group home in Happy Valley-Goose Bay.
He says that’s just the latest tragedy in a system that has devastated their families in so many ways.
