It’s been six weeks since James Cody was shot and killed on Craigmillar Avenue in St. John’s and still no charges have been laid or a suspect formally named by officials.
Meanwhile, no charges have yet been laid in a stabbing incident in the Goulds four months ago that claimed the life of a 20-year-old man.
Those are just two of five homicide investigations that have been ongoing since September of 2019.
“We wish to advise the victims’ families, and our community as a whole, that the RNC has the utmost confidence in our investigators, and their dedication to exhausting all avenues to uncover information…
…Through professionalism and teamwork, our officers have continued to advance the noted homicide investigations.”
The RNC says homicide investigations involve the collection of high volumes of information, all of which require validation.
Homicide investigations are sensitive and complex, and investigators work with advancing technology, science and evolving case law on a continual basis.
“The integrity of these investigations are a priority as it relates to public interest, and as previously discussed, we do not perceive a public safety risk in connection with any homicide file currently active. It is integrity of the investigation that promotes our ability to lawfully conclude these investigations.”
Family liaison officers are assigned to each investigation to provide regular contact and updates on the investigation while respecting the privacy of families and close friends.
The RNC says none of the homicide investigations currently underway involve a perceived public safety risk.
Through all the various complexities involved, the Constabulary says the integrity of the investigation has to be maintained, and they “will not rest” until all available avenues of investigation have been pursued and tested.
