Recent social media posts might have some people thinking fall is coming a bit early, but a local arborist says it’s more likely that weather conditions this summer are causing certain leaf pests to flourish.
Some are reporting complete defoliation of their trees, with curled, brown leaves blanketing area lawns, while other trees remain unscathed. Evan Murray of Murray’s Garden Centre says it’s impossible to diagnose a particular problem sight unseen, but conditions this summer have been ideal for fungal spots on local tree leaves. Murray says a wet, cool July, followed by a hot, humid August have been ideal for fungal infections.
Meanwhile, there have been reports of plenty of aphids and different breeds of caterpillar that are also feasting on leafy trees.
Murray advises affected property owners that it’s not the end of the world. While there’s not much that can be done this late in the season, those types of infestations and infections are not harmful to trees and they will bounce back next summer.
If someone is looking for a specific diagnosis, Murray recommends sending him an email or bringing a sample along (in a sealed plastic baggie) for examination. His email is info@murraysgardens.com.
