One of the largest animals that has ever lived was spotted from the air during a recent flyover off the east coast this week.
The massive—and endangered—North West Atlantic blue whale was photographed by a team of DFO observers onboard a chartered PAL Twin Otter, flying transects over the Scotian Shelf.
A DFO official says the flyover is part of ongoing efforts by the federal government to monitor waters off the Canadian east coast for North Atlantic right whales.
The teams are also recording the other marine species they see.
Multiple transects were completed in the Gulf of St. Lawrence earlier this year.
