The House of Assembly paid tribute today to a man—familiar to many—who has dedicated his life to sport in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Carl Lake hung up his umpire uniform a few weeks ago after more than half a century umpiring games in the capital city.
Minister Bernard Davis called Lake a “pillar” in the provincial sporting scene since his early days as a ball boy at St. Pat’s Ballpark in the late 1950s.
He became an umpire in 1967 and was a fixture at St. Pat’s for the next 53 years.
Lake was inducted as a builder in Baseball NL’s Hall of Fame in 2006.
