The Financial Post is reporting that car manufacturer Tesla is in talks with Vale to purchase Canadian nickel for electric cars.
The paper says Elon Musk has offered Canadian mining companies a “giant contract” if supplies can be produced in an environmentally sensitive way.
The company, Vale, tells VOCM News it has engaged in talks with stakeholders at all points along the supply chain, including Tesla, to explore the possibility of partnerships.
Nickel is an essential component in the manufacturing of electric vehicle batteries.
Operations at Vale’s Voisey’s Bay mine expansion project in Labrador have resumed and are 54 per cent complete as of the end of September.
That includes more than 9,000 metres of underground development, while the company is on track to start production from the Reid Brook mine in early 2021.
