It’s construction season and there will no doubt be slowdowns for those hitting the roadways. While nobody enjoys being stuck in traffic, the zipper merge, where applicable, can help streamline the process.
In construction zones where traffic is reduced by one lane, signs may be in place to direct drivers to zipper merge in order to keep traffic moving more smoothly.
Sean Kelly, president of Safety NL, says it’s a common sight to see drivers either zipper merge incorrectly or not know how to navigate it at all.
He says the practice is similar to going through a double lane drive thru.
He says it’s similar as two lanes of traffic are in place and take turns merging into one. It’s important that drivers take turns at the top of the line as that is what speeds up the process.
