Police on the west coast nabbed an alleged drunk driver last night but not in the usual fashion.
An RNC officer who was patrolling the downtown core in Corner Brook at about 3:30 a.m. this morning noticed a vehicle driving on Herald Avenue in the wrong direction on a one-way road.
Police tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver sped off at a high rate of speed. Police did not pursue but several cars descended on the area and within minutes located the suspect vehicle abandoned behind a commercial property on Park Street.
Officers searched the area on foot and located the driver lying on the ground between two buildings.
The 21-year-old man, a resident of Deer Lake, has been charged with drunk driving, dangerous driving and flight from police.
The vehicle was impounded and the driver was given a 90-day suspension. He will be in court in November.
