A home-based child care operator is pleased with a meeting with Education Minister Tom Osborne yesterday.
Kendra Harrigan operates a regulated child care operation out of her home in Witless Bay.
She was notified by the province last week that she would have to lower the rate she charges parents from $45 to $38 in order for them to avail of the province’s $25 a day childcare program.
Harrigan told VOCM News at the time that that loss of income was simply too much.
Harrigan and a number of other home-based child care providers met with Minister Osborne yesterday.
She says she’s satisfied that he heard their concerns, and hopeful that if they do have to lower their rates, it won’t be by very much.
The minister calls the meeting cordial and informative. Osborne says his officials are looking at ways to reduce red tape and regulations that are making the program cost-prohibitive for some centres.
He says changes to the original plan could be made within days, not weeks.
It was really nice to meet @TomOsborneMHA in person this morning to discuss our concerns about the Operating Grant Program. Hopefully some positive changes will be made to the OGP before January 1st/2021 ??#ECE #FamilyChildcare @PremierofNL @FureyAndrew pic.twitter.com/VPAh8PgIdL
