There will be no residential tax increases in the city of Corner Brook in the coming year, but changes are coming for some businesses.
Last night the city tabled a $35-million budget for 2021.
Business taxes are going up for grocery stores, large retail outlets and department stores. However, there will be a decrease in taxes for over 100 businesses in the hospitality and tourism sectors.
Without an adjustment to business tax rates, the city says overall business taxes would have been down by over $300,000 due to lower assessments and business closures.
There will be no layoffs, although the city notes that job cuts from earlier in the year will remain in effect.
Other highlights include a 23 per cent increase to curb and sidewalk repair funding plans to continue with work on multi-use trails, plans to forge ahead with an ATV summer festival, and plans to break ground on the Regional Recreational Centre in the spring.
