The Western Environment Centre in Corner Brook is calling on Premier Andrew Furey and his economic recovery team to focus on a plan to transition away from oil and gas.
The WEC has written a letter to the premier to reconsider plans to double oil and gas development by 2030 and bring an end to new exploration in the offshore.
It’s also asking for an end to what it calls subsidies for the industry and confirmation that the recent federal funding will go to support workers and address carbon emissions rather than further industry development.
Chair Glen Keeling says the province’s Economic Recovery Team has the “opportunity to pivot” away from oil and gas by creating a carefully managed transition plan that “prioritizes workers and communities.”
