The relentless New Year’s fireworks in the metro region finally tapered off as the weekend came to a close but in the eyes of some, it is time for lawmakers to intervene.
The City of St. John’s struck an ad hoc committee some months ago to take a look at the issue. Councillor Sandy Hickman, one of four members of council on the committee, says there’s no question that the city received more complaints about the fireworks this New Year’s than last.
It was too windy for fireworks New Year’s Eve but the popping could still be heard through Saturday, January 2.
Councillor Hickman says several options are on the table, but he would prefer to see people head to the city celebration at Quidi Vidi instead of setting off personal flares.
He says they may recommend to council that the committee do a deeper review, but that is just a possibility.
