A disappointing result at the World Juniors for Team Canada which lost 2-0 to the United States in the Gold medal game, but the residents of Bay Roberts are proud of the effort of two Newfoundlanders with deep Bay Roberts roots.
Great piece! Go @DawsonMercer14 and Team Canada ???? Canada, the province of NL and particularly @Town_BayRoberts are behind you & the team 100% @AlexNewhook_ https://t.co/gVTshoWzmw

Dawson Mercer’s hockey career began at the Bay Arena in his hometown, while Alex Newhook of St. John’s is descended from the Mercers on his mother’s side. His great-grandfather served in WWI and served as the very first mayor of Bay Roberts.
Sending a shoutout to Alex Newhook whose great grandfather RJ Mercer of @Town_BayRoberts served with the Regiment during WWI. Keeping our rich hockey tradition alive as #TeamCanada goes for gold tonight! #NL #WorldJuniors @HC_WJC ???? pic.twitter.com/hxWMbE2QFp

Mayor Philip Wood says Team Canada, and Mercer and Newhook, have a lot to be proud of.
He calls the two Newfoundlanders the “heart and soul” of Team Canada.
Wood says while both players have connections to the Mercers, he doesn’t believe the two families are directly related.
Bay Roberts was supposed to host the 2020 Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, but they were postponed due to the pandemic. The mayor expects Team Canada’s effort to be formally recognized as part of the event when it finally goes ahead.
#TeamCanada ???? takes silver ?? at the 2021 #WorldJuniors ??
Canada ?? repped the heritage red one last time as they returned to Rogers Place in Edmonton for their final matchup, falling 2-0 to USA.
