At least one analyst believes there may not be enough time left in Trump’s presidency to have him formally ousted.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi yesterday indicated that Trump may be impeached if the 25th Amendment is not invoked.
Calls have been increasing for the removal of Donald Trump from the US presidency following a shocking insurrection at the Capitol Building in Washington this week.
Thousands of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building, breaching the House and the Senate. Four people died initially including a woman, one of the protesters, who was shot. Since then, a member of law enforcement has died from injuries he sustained in the riot.
The incident followed a lengthy speech by Trump in which he repeated the claim that the presidential election was rigged and encouraged supporters to march on the Capitol.
Duff Conacher is the co-founder of Democracy Watch in Ottawa. He says with less than two weeks until Joe Biden is officially sworn-in, invoking the 25th Amendment to have Trump removed may not be realistic.
He believes there is a case for removal, but there may not be enough time.
Whether or not Trump could be charged with inciting a riot remains to be seen says Conacher.
He says the thing that needs to be examined is whether or not his comments crossed the line, inciting supporters to breach the Capitol Building.
