A group dedicated to strengthening democratic institutions is reiterating its call for laws to keep the statements made by politicians in check.
Duff Conacher is a co-founder of Democracy Watch. He was responding to the disinformation spread during the presidency of Donald Trump.
Conacher says in both the United States and Canada there is no requirement for elected officials to be honest.
He believes there is room to have a rule not allowing politicians to “blatantly lie.”
He says a lot of the claims Trump has made in the last four years have been “blatant lies” which cannot be backed up factually and cannot be protected as opinion. It can be dangerous for a leader to continue to lie because there will be people who believe him.
