Premier Andrew Furey is touting 2022 as a ‘come home year’ to promote tourism and tempt Newfoundland and Labrador ex-pats to move home.
He made the announcement while campaigning on the Northern Peninsula yesterday.
Furey was asked if the idea is realistic, given the continued uncertainty around the pandemic and global travel restrictions.
He says he does believe it’s realistic to happen in 2022, adding there are many Newfoundlanders and Labradorians around the world very anxious to come home.
Furey says the province should welcome them with open arms, and the government will promote that effort.
Through the COVID-19 pandemic, we haven’t been able to gather as we’re used to. We’ve gone a long time without seeing family and friends who live away. As vaccines roll out, the Furey government will host ‘Come Home Year 2022’ to help tourism – and help reunite us. pic.twitter.com/Kr0GzPgrmu
