The province is mourning the loss of one of the last great boat builders in the region.
Henry Vokey of Trinity passed away on Wednesday at the age of 91.
Heritage NL says he was born in Little Harbour, Trinity Bay in 1929 where he built his first boat at the age of 25. In the 60s he moved his family to Trinity where he opened Vokey’s Shipyard.
It’s estimated that Vokey built over 1,000 boats of all kinds in his lifetime.
The shipyard closed in the 90s and in 2012 he launched his very last schooner, an event that was documented on Land and Sea.
Visitation is taking place on Sunday at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Trinity from where the funeral service will take place on Monday, February 1.
