Phase one of vaccinations across Newfoundland and Labrador have been ongoing for nearly two months now, and so far public health is making “good inroads” in pushing through some of the initial priority groups.
That’s according to the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, making specific reference to Indigenous communities, long-term care, and front line health care staff.
The process has been hindered by cuts to shipments of both the Moderna and Pfizer products. The next shipment of vaccine is set to arrive this week, and according to Fitzgerald will be one tray of the Pfizer vaccine.
She says our ability to move on to the next priority groups is dependent on when our vaccine shipments begin increasing again.
As soon as the supply increases, they will be turning their attention to those 85 years of age and older, then working downward from there.
She notes that discussions are happening in regards to priority groups for phase two and that we’ll know more about that “in the coming weeks.”
