Questions are being asked about what wiggle room is available should certain areas see a major winter storm on election day.
Major storm systems are not uncommon in mid-February and this election is set for Saturday, February 13.
The Elections Act gives Chief Electoral Officer, Bruce Chaulk the authority to move the date of the election in the case of a snowstorm or other major weather event.
Elections NL says if there was a big blizzard in Lab West, for instance, Chaulk can cancel the polls in that area alone, while the rest of the province proceeds with election day as normal.
Elections NL says the date chosen would depend entirely on the district and the circumstances involved—particularly if schools are included in the voting locations affected.
As for cost, Elections NL says moving the election day in a district might result in having to hire more people or booking another location if the selected location is no longer available.
