The west coast man accused of threatening politicians in an effort to stop the provincial election from happening made another brief court appearance today.
66-year-old George Brake listened in via teleconference as the Crown advised that his psychiatric assessment at the Waterford Hospital would be extended by another week. The tests were ordered to determine if he’s fit to stand trial.
Brake faces six charges in connection with last week’s incident in which he led RCMP on a high-speed chase along the Trans-Canada Highway and through the town of Deer Lake, ending at the office of an election candidate. Police have said no specific candidates were named by Brake.
He’s charged with uttering threats, dangerous operation of a vehicle, fleeing from police, careless use of a firearm, unauthorized use of a firearm, and possessing weapons for a dangerous purpose.
Police found 36 knives in the cab of his pickup when he was arrested shortly before 11 a.m. on January 26. The firearms charges were laid following a search of his mobile home in Shoal Brook.
Brake is due back in court on February 11.
