St. John’s City Council will be discussing the contentious issue of decorative lighting in Galway during tomorrow’s city council meeting.
The city needs to make a decision regarding the payment to Dewcor of the savings from installing decorative LED street lights in Galway.
The amount of money involved is about $500,000.
Typical street lights throughout St. John’s and much of the province are owned and operated by Newfoundland Power, for which the city pays an all-inclusive monthly rate that includes operation and maintenance.
In 2016, Dewcor proposed to purchase and install the lights, and then have the city take over and maintain them. A cost analysis indicated potential savings to the city, savings which Dewcor has since requested be passed on to them.
City staff, however, feel that Dewcor should have included that condition in its initial request to council.
The tentative position of council is that no compensation be provided to Dewcor at this time as there are too many uncertainties on the cost sheet.
