The government is changing its strategy for the distribution of Chromebook computers in light of the closure of Mount Pearl Senior High school.
The school has shut down following at least two positive cases of COVID-19 among students, as well as confirmation of community spread. As a result, the school is pivoting to an online learning model for the foreseeable future.
The priority for Chromebooks had been rural parts of Newfoundland and Labrador, but Premier Andrew Furey says they’ve now changed that strategy to make sure they go to the students who need them most right now.
He says he’s been informed by Education Minister Tom Osborne and the school district that Mount Pearl Senior High will be ready to transition to online learning in a matter of days.
Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, meanwhile, says it’s too early to say how long the school will have to remain closed.
