The Seniors’ Advocate in Newfoundland and Labrador fears that many seniors have just given up trying to be part of the election.
The province has reverted to an on-demand vote-by-mail election with Friday night the deadline to ask for a voters’ kit. The original deadline was last night but the Chief Electoral Officer moved that back on the weekend.
Dr. Suzanne Brake is calling for common sense to prevail as many seniors do not have access to computers but do have a landline.
She’s calling on Elections NL to delay the deadline until such time as people who call for a kit will get an answer instead of an answering machine or a hangup beep.
Brake says seniors are the ones who vote. They’re the ones whose fathers and uncles fought in WWII but Brake is concerned that many have given up trying to vote this time.
