Two elements of the province’s history will be formally recognized through the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program this coming week.
Since the program’s inception in 2010, 37 designations have been made, including the two designations that are being recognized on Wednesday.
Ignatius, known as Nish Rumboldt is being recognized as an Exceptional Person from the Past, while the establishment of the Newfoundland Ranger Force is being recognized as an Outstanding Historic Event.
Nish Rumboldt enjoyed a 40-year career making music enjoyable, fun and accessible to people across the province. He was essential to the creation of a choral music community in Newfoundland and Labrador.
The creation of the Newfoundland Ranger Force is what the Historic Commemorations Program calls an often-overlooked part of the province’s history. They played an important role in maintaining the economic and social well-being of the communities they served in what is described as “one of the most difficult periods in Newfoundland and Labrador history.”
