Energy Minister Andrew Parsons has given a statement to RCMP following a complaint made against him by RNC officer Joe Smyth.
Smyth claims Parsons, the former justice minister, had a hand in him being charged with obstruction of justice in connection with a traffic ticket.
In December, Parsons shrugged off the complaint, calling it “laughable and beyond ridiculous.” But he told reporters yesterday that he has reached out to the RCMP to give his side of the story.
Parsons says if there is an investigation, he wants to co-operate and participate, adding his version of events lines up with that of the director of public prosecutions and chief of police. He calls it a lot of “foolishness and garbage,” but says the process must be followed nonetheless.
In his complaint, Smyth cited a text message from a cabinet minister to an RNC officer stating Parsons “played a part” in him being charged.

Previous to that, Smyth was cleared of wrongdoing in the shooting death of Don Dunphy in 2015.
Parsons, meanwhile, says he hasn’t heard from the RCMP since giving his statement.
