The city of Corner Brook has officially renamed the Wellington Street Sports Complex’s soccer pitch the Doug Sweetapple Field.
In October of last year, a joint proposal was submitted to the city from the mens’ and ladies’ soccer leagues as well as the Corner Brook Minor Soccer Association to name the pitch after Sweetapple—a man described as the city’s “top advocate” of the game.
Sweetapple was one of the main forces behind the campaign to bring an artificial turf field to the region and in 1987 was inducted into the NL Soccer Hall of Fame as a builder.
Sweetapple himself was in attendance last night.
