Independent MHA Paul Lane is shaking his head over Newfoundland Power’s recent request for a rate increase and he’s calling on residents to speak out.
Consumer Advocate Dennis Browne says they’re seeking an increase in their rate of return from 8.5 to 9.8 percent—a 16 percent increase.
They are also seeking an increase in rates that we pay—eight cents on every $100 bill, come next spring.
Paul Lane says the utility tried to seek a similar rate increase just prior to COVID and later withdrew that application following significant public pressure. He’s encouraging people to speak out, and don’t let what he calls “corporate greed rule the day.”
However, Newfoundland Power has provided VOCM News with a statement, saying that Lane’s claim is incorrect. They say that they did not withdraw its last general rate application in 2018, and a settlement between Newfoundland Power and the Consumer Advocate that established a “fair return” and resulted in no rate increase for customers.
