It’s unlike anything else you’ll see on the roads.
People in the capital city’s downtown yesterday may have noticed a unique vehicle driving around, a wooden 1972 Volkswagen Beetle.
Owner Matthew Dawe says he has had the vehicle for about a month. His grandfather, who is now 89, started building the vehicle in 1993 and finished in 1995.
Although it was never his career, Dawe says carpentry was his grandfather’s hobby.
He recalls his grandfather having a workshop in his shed, and every time they’d go over to visit he was making something out of wood. He says the car was his pop’s “pride and joy.”
According to Dawe, there is another wooden car in Newfoundland, but it looks completely different.
He says the car was “kind of” modeled after the Volkswagen Thing, but mostly came from his grandfather’s imagination.
