A St. John’s MP is calling on the federal government to take full responsibility for the changes needed to address racism in the country’s policing.
NDP public safety critic and St. John’s East MP Jack Harris is insisting that the minister responsible for the Committee on Public Safety’s report on racism in policing in Canada and the Prime Minister complete the changes recommended in the study.
Harris, who announced his retirement earlier this week, motioned for the study to be conducted and fully supports the recommendations.
In addition to the recommendations in the report, Harris says a complete overhaul of RCMP training is needed, including the closure of a facility in Regina that has a long history of instilling a “military mindset” and “colonial culture” onto new recruits.
The NDP proposes a new national police college to provide professional training, as well as a parallel Indigenous police college if wanted by Indigenous leaders.
