Sheriff’s Officers chased down and arrested a man on the downtown pedestrian mall today after back-to-back false fire alarms at Atlantic Place.
The first one sounded as the courts prepared to get underway at 2 p.m. That forced the evacuation of hundreds from the courts and the rest of the building for almost a half hour.
No sooner was everyone back inside when the alarm sounded again.
That sent officers into the streets looking for a man who they were seen having a dispute with earlier. Just before 3 p.m. they spotted and apprehended the suspect not far from the lockup at Supreme Court, where he was immediately escorted. Charges of public mischief are pending.
The incidents were an early test of emergency response downtown in the midst of the just opened, pedestrian mall.
One fire truck managed to carefully make its way to the front of Atlantic Place as staff from inside and others, including some tourists, wandered by and snapped pictures.
