Public Health is lowering the interval between first and second COVID vaccines from eight weeks to 28 days.
Residents can now book their second dose 28 days after their first dose.
That follows the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommendations and was prompted by increased supply, concerns about the circulation of the Delta variant, and a desire to get as many people fully vaccinated as possible before the next school year starts in September.
Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Janice Fitzgerald made the announcement today.
“What’s more important right now is that everybody gets their second dose, and this change allows greater flexibility to help make that happen.”
Earlier Appointments
Eastern Health is now offering earlier appointments for COVID-19 vaccinations.
Starting immediately, those who wish to move their appointment to within 28 days of their first dose can do so, however, people can keep their original appointment if they prefer.
Officials are encouraging those who are being offered a different COVID-19 vaccine than their first shot to take the vaccine available. Most Eastern Health clinics are offering Moderna.
Other regional health authorities are releasing their updated plans regarding the vaccine rollout. People are encouraged to check with their authority for more information.
