The fisheries union is calling on the provincial government to make some changes in the process used to establish the price harvesters get for a pound of fish.
The FFAW-Unifor says under the current collective bargaining system, processors are not required to disclose any information on markets, price, pack-out or yield. As a result, the Standing Fish Price Setting Panel, which sets the price for most species, is often required to make decisions without sufficient information.
Union President Keith Sullivan says there is now a grading protocol for sea cucumber, an emerging fishery, that is killing the value of the fishery according to Sullivan.
He says they put in place a sampling process for sea cucumber which has become a $10 million fishery. He adds that the provincial government has to step up and require more transparency in the panel process.
