The federal government has begun a public engagement process on proposed legislation focused on the transition to a low carbon future.
Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan officially launched the consultation process yesterday.
They are looking to talk with stakeholders, such as labour organizations, provincial and territorial governments, and indigenous groups about potential just transition legislation. That legislation would help guide the transition to a low carbon economy and make sure it is equitable for workers and their communities.
As for why they didn’t start such a process sooner, O’Regan explains that after a turbulent couple of years, the industry is only now seeing some stability. He says oil-producing provinces, like NL, are beginning to dig themselves out of that instability, and now is a good time to talk about what the future looks like.
O’Regan says they hope to introduce the legislation in the fall.
