A new hub aimed at giving people greater access to locally-grown food has opened up shop on the province’s west coast.
Food First NL has opened the Western NL Food Hub in Corner Brook.
Executive Director Josh Smee explains that people can place an order every week from a list of about 20 local producers. The food is then packaged, and people can pick it up in-store.
According to Smee, they got the idea from a similar organization in Cape Breton.
There, he says the idea has been “going gangbusters” for a couple of years. He explains that sometimes there is a gap in access to local food because it often isn’t worth the time of producers to come into town and try to sell their product because it is taking them away from their work, and the food hub is a solution to that.
