Stingray Radio is throwing it’s support behind a historic AM radio station in the St. John’s region after its broadcast was cut short by a recent lightning storm.
VOWR is a largely volunteer-driven radio station on the AM band, hosted out of Westley United Church in St. John’s. It has broadcast faithfully for over 97 years since it hit the airwaves in 1924.
However, the airwaves on 800AM fell silent over the weekend after a lightning storm struck the capital city. While they’re hopeful to get the station back up and running, Stingray’s New Country radio will carry VOWR’s 11 a.m. service this Sunday.
The slight shift means listeners will need to turn the dial to 930AM in St. John’s. Otherwise the broadcast will still be shared online and via television.
VOWR offered its thanks for the gesture, saying it’s grateful for its industry peers and the thousands of listeners who rallied behind them.
Now this, friends, is teamwork. While VOWR can still be heard online, a huge population of our listeners relies on our traditional 800AM radio dial service. Until that service is restored, we are so grateful to our industry peers and thousands of listeners for rallying behind us. https://t.co/tMfEetsIkm
