The community of Shea Heights is rallying behind a former long-time resident following a leg amputation.
82-year-old Bridget Williams, also known as “Bridie,” lived in Shea Heights 77 years before moving to Cambridge so she could be cared for by her daughter, Regina.
According to her, after her mother moved in with her she took a stroke and was later diagnosed with dementia.
Things took another terrible turn earlier this month when the woman’s leg had to be amputated to combat a serious infection.
In order to keep her mother at home, Williams explains that her house will have to be retrofitted to make it more accessible, which can cost over $25,000.
She has begun the process of raising the funds for the renovations, and as calling on members of the Shea Heights community for help.
She describes the response so far as “amazing,” and is hopeful that they can give her mom some comfort in life. She says her mom’s spirits are “amazing,” noting that she still has “so much life to live.”
