Trades NL is looking for changes to the federal Income Tax Act to make it easier for skilled trades workers who must travel for work to get back and forth.
It’s one of the questions Trades NL is encouraging members to ask candidates during the federal election campaign.
Executive director Darin King says there are many classes of workers who must travel for work, and there are provisions in the Income Tax Act that allow certain workers to claim tax credits for expenses incurred as a result of doing business.
Those same tax credits don’t extend to skilled trades workers who have to travel, says King.
He says if you’re a salesperson selling rebar, you can claim your travel expenses, and stay in a hotel.
“Our same trades workers, who travel throughout the country to lay that rebar…can’t claim a tax credit,” according to King.
