The RCMP are warning hunters to be aware of their surroundings when checking the accuracy of firearms near communities.
Each year, police receive reports of shots being fired by hunters “sighting in” near residential areas across the province heading into the fall hunting season.
Under the Provincial Wildlife Act, it is illegal to shoot a firearm within 1,000 metres of a school, playground or athletic field or within 300 metres of a residence. Charges may also apply under the Criminal Code if a firearm is discharged in a way that is a concern to public safety.
The police force is encouraging hunters to head to a firing range to sight in a gun.
