NAPE President Jerry Earle says the state of the province’s paramedicine system was brought starkly into light in the wake of Hurricane Larry.
Earle says he received a steady stream of calls and messages from paramedics who struggled to deal with a large number of priority calls and emergencies.
The union says there were multiple red alerts throughout Friday, Saturday and Sunday, not only in the metro region but also in CBS and Conception Bay North – equating to four hours of red alert status time on Sunday along.
A red alert is when no ambulance is available to respond to a call.
At one point, a standby unit had to be pulled from what the union calls a “potentially serious situation” to respond to a traffic accident according to NAPE.
